Jose De la Cruz, commonly known as Huseng Sisiw, was born on December 21, 1746, in Tondo, Manila, and is best known as the tutor of Florante at Laura novelist Francisco Balagtas. Despite his lack of schooling, he is reigned as Hari ng mga Makata sa Katagalugan. He teaches himself Katon cartilla and Doctrina Cristina and uses this expertise to make a name for himself.
Jesus T. Peralta
Jesus Peralta was born on December 26, 1932, and was a well-known award-winning writer and anthropologist who lived in the Philippines. He was the recipient of several Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards. Play the Judas, Scent of Fear, Longer Mourning, The Mouth is an Open Wound, and The Sign of the Sea Gulls are among his significant pieces.
Jesus Balmori
Jess “Batikuling” Balmori (January 10, 1887 – May 23, 1948) was a Filipino poet, journalist, dramatist, and playwright. He was born in Manila’s Ermita neighborhood. Balmori attended Ateneo Municipal de Manila. He later attended Colegio de San Juan de Letrán and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Iñigo Regalado Corcuera
Iñigo Regalado y Corcuera, a 19th-century printer and Tagalog poet, was born on June 1, 1855, and died on September 2, 1896. Iigo Ed, a Tagalog author, was his son. Regalado. He was also known as Iigoñigo, Odalager, and Gaolerad.
Hermogenes Ilagan
Hermogenes Ilagan was born in the Philippines on April 19, 1873, and was a well-known theater actor, dramatist, and director. One of the things that distinguished Ilagan was that he was a descendant of Francisco Baltazar. Hermogenes Ilagan became renowned as the Tagalog Zarzuela’s father. Among his major works are Ang Buhay nga naman, ang buwan ng Oktubre, Dahil kay Ina, and Wagas na Pag-ibig.
Francisco Soc Rodgrigo
Francisco Soc Rodrigo was born on January 24, 1914. Rodrigo wrote plays in both English and Tagalog that were lauded as distillations of the Filipino spirit. He was an activist during the martial regime imposed by the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. In November 1998, the same year he died, Soc Rodrigo’s name was placed to the Wall of Remembrance at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani in Quezon City to honor his commitment to the fight against Ferdinand Marcos. The Gawad Soc Rodrigo award, named after him, is presented jointly by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) (NCCA).
